TED Ankara Koleji Vakfı Özel İlkokulu 1-4.Sınıflar İngilizce Öğretiminin Genel Amaçları:

Öğrencilerimizin:

• İngilizceyi severek öğrenmelerini,
• Kendilerine güvenmeleri ve eleştirel düşünme becerisi kazanmalarını,
• Avrupa Birliği Standartları çerçevesinde CEF-A1/A1+ düzeyinde İngilizce konuşma, okuduğunu ve dinlediğini anlama ile yazılı anlatım temel becerilerini kazanmalarını,
• Bulundukları düzeye uygun temel dilbilgisi kurallarını ve sözcükleri kullanmalarını,
• Başka kültürleri ve yaşam biçimlerini tanıma ve anlamalarını,
• Kazandıkları becerileri, düzeylerine uygun olarak geliştirmelerini ve hayata geçirmelerini,
• Uluslararası standartta İngilizce öğrenmelerini ve girecekleri uluslararası İngilizce sınavlarda başarılı olmalarını hedeflemekteyiz. 

Okulumuzda İngilizce eğitiminde, tüm dil öğretim yöntem ve teknikleri, öğrencilerimizin ilgisini yüksek tutmak için kullanılır. Çoklu zeka kuramına uygun olarak her öğrencinin farklı öğrenme şekli olduğu düşüncesi ile sınıf içi etkinliklerin ve uygulanan tekniklerin görsel, işitsel olmasına ve öğrencilerin, öğrendiklerini hayata geçirebilmesini destelemesine özen gösterilir. Tüm düzeylerde dersler Türk ve yabancı uyruklu İngilizce öğretmenleri tarafından yürütülür.

1. Sınıf

1.sınıflarımızda İngilizce dersleri, haftada 6 saati yabancı uyruklu, 4 saati Türk öğretmenle olmak üzere toplam 10 saattir. Öğrencilerimiz İngilizceyi ders kitaplarına paralel, öğrenci odaklı aktivitelerle; hikayeleri, tekerlemeleri, dinleyerek, tekrarlayarak, resimleyerek, boyayarak ve canlandırarak öğrenirler. Bu şekilde öğrencilerin 4 temel beceriyi (okuma-yazma, dinleme-konuşma) hayata geçirmelerini ve derste aktif oldukları için de İngilizceyi severek öğrenmelerini hedeflemekteyiz. Eleştirel düşünebilen öğrenciler yetiştirmek de hedeflerimiz içerisindedir. Sınıflarımızdaki teknik donanım ve multimedya desteği derslerimizin daha ilgi çekici hale getirilmesine yardımcı olmaktadır. Online programlar da öğrencilerimizin okuma, dinleme ve konuşma becerilerini desteklemektedir.

2. Sınıf

2. sınıflarımızda İngilizce dersleri, haftada 6 saati yabancı uyruklu, 4 saati Türk öğretmenle olmak üzere toplam 10 saattir. Derslerimiz, ders kitaplarından ve kısa hikayelerden oluşan, hayal gücünü ve yaratıcılığı ortaya çıkaran materyaller desteği ile sürdürülmektedir. Amacımız, özgüvenli, eleştirel düşünebilen, kendi düzeylerinde yazılı ve sözlü olarak etkin iletişim kurabilen ve öğrendiklerini bir sonraki yıla aktarabilen öğrenciler yetiştirmektir. Tüm bunların yanında öğrencilerimizin yabancı dili severek öğrenmeleri de önceliklerimiz arasındadır. Öğrencilerimiz sınıf içerisinde görerek ve yaparak öğrenmektedir. Derslerimizi teknik donanımlı sınıflarda multimedya destekli olarak sürdürmekteyiz. Online programlar da öğrencilerimizin okuma, dinleme ve konuşma becerilerini desteklemektedir.

3. Sınıf

3. sınıflarımızda İngilizce derslerimiz haftada 8 saat Türk, 4 saat yabancı uyruklu öğretmenle olmak üzere toplam 12 saattir. Programın düzeyi ve içeriği, okulumuza önceden başlamış olan öğrenciler ile yeni katılan öğrencilerin yıl sonunda aynı düzeye gelmelerini sağlayacak şekilde planlanmaktadır. Amacımız, kendine güvenli, eleştirel düşünebilen, kendi düzeylerinde yazılı ve sözlü olarak etkin iletişim kurabilen ve öğrendiklerini bir sonraki yıla aktarabilen öğrenciler yetiştirmektir. Tüm bunların yanında öğrencilerimizin yabancı dili severek öğrenmeleri de önceliklerimiz arasındadır. Öğrencilerimizin, yılsonunda, temel dil yapılarını, basit dil kalıplarını ve sözcükleri dinlemeleri, anlamaları, konuşmaları, okumaları ve yazmalarını hedeflemekteyiz. Öğrenilenleri öğrencilerimizin becerilerini zevkle geliştirebilecekleri etkinliklerle de pekiştirmekteyiz. Bu etkinliklerin içeriğini, şarkılar, melodiler, karaoke, canlandırmalar, oyunlar, hikayeler, ikili çalışmalar, grup çalışmaları ve kişisel değerlendirme çalışmaları oluşturur. Derslerimizi teknik donanımlı sınıflarda multimedya destekli olarak sürdürmekteyiz. 3.sınıflarda da online programlar öğrencilerimizin okuma, dinleme ve konuşma becerilerini desteklemektedir.

4. Sınıf

4. sınıflarımızda İngilizce derslerimiz haftada 8 saat Türk , 4 saat yabancı uyruklu öğretmenle olmak üzere toplam 12 saattir. Bu yaş grubundaki öğrencilerimizin İngilizceyi severek öğrenmelerini, dinleme, konuşma, okuma ve yazma becerilerini geliştirmelerini hedeflemekteyiz. Öğrencilerimizin bu düzeye kadar öğrendikleri tekrarlanarak hatırlatılırken, yeni dil yapıları ve sözcükler de çeşitli etkinliklerle renklendirilerek öğretilmektedir. Araştırma yaparak, sunumlar ve şarkılarla da dili pekiştirme aktiviteleri yapılmaktadır. 4.sınıflarımızda online programlar ile öğrencilerimizin okuma, dinleme ve konuşma becerileri de desteklenmektedir. Dördüncü sınıfın sonunda öğrencilerimizin Avrupa Birliği standartlarında CEF-A1+ düzeyine ulaşmalarını hedeflemekteyiz.

Online Programları

• Active Learn (Bug Club) 1-3. Sınıflarda, 4. sınıflarda Scholastic Learning Zone online okuma programı uygulanmaktadır. Programın kütüphanesinden öğrencilerin seviyelerine uygun kitaplar seçilir. Öğrenciler kendilerine verilen şifrelerle programa giriş yaparak bu kitapları okurlar, ses kaydı ve dinleme yapabilirler. Okunan kitaplarla ilgili yapılan çalışmalar öğrencilerin eleştirel düşünebilme becerilerini geliştirmektedir.
• 1-4. Sınıflarda, kullanılan Main Course kitaplarına ait öğrenmeyi pekiştirici aktiviteleri içeren online LMS sistemi bulunmaktadır.

Uluslararası Sınavlar 
İsteyen 4.sınıf öğrencilerimiz 2018-2019 öğretim yılından beri okulumuzda uygulanmakta olan TOEFL Primary Step1 sınavlarına girmektedirler. Öğrencilerimiz, başarı oranlarının çok yüksek olduğu bu sertifika sınavlarına yıl boyunca İngilizce derslerinde hazırlanmaktadır.

Etkinlikler
Açık Sınıf Uygulamaları: 1-4.sınıflarda velilerimiz için İngilizce açık sınıf uygulamaları yapılmaktadır. Oldukça beğenilen bu gösterilerde, seçilen konular çerçevesinde öğrencilerimiz aktif rol almaktadırlar. 
2. Yarıyılda yaptığımız İngilizce sunumlarda tüm öğrencilerimiz görev almaktadır. İngilizce sunumları ile öğrenciler, yıl boyunca öğrendikleri bilgileri bir tiyatro prodüksiyonunda sergilerken aynı zamanda sosyal becerilerini de geliştirmiş olmaktadır. Bu sunumlar öğrencilerimiz tarafından da oldukça eğlenceli ve motive edici bulunmaktadır.

English Day : “Let’s Speak English Together” etkinlikleri çerçevesinde her hafta öğlen saatlerinde öğrencilerle birlikte farklı etkinlikler sergilenmektedir. 

English Radio Program:  Salı sabahları öğrenciler tarafından yapılan İngilizce radyo programlarında hava durumu, öğle yemeği menüsü, önemli günler ve etkinlikler ile “English Day” için planlanan etkinlik hakkında bilgiler verilmektedir.

İngilizce Yarışma:  Yıl boyunca sınıflar arasında çeşitli İngilizce yarışmalar yapılmaktadır. Bu etkinlikler öğrencileri motive etmenin yanı sıra öğrencilere takım çalışmasının önemini öğretmeye de yardımcı olmaktadır.

The Young Voice of TED Forum:  Yılda iki kez, 4. sınıf öğrencilerinin katılımıyla forum etkinliği düzenlenmektedir. Bunlardan ikincisinde 4 ve 5. sınıf öğrencileri ortak çalışmaktadır. Bu forumlarda öğrenciler belirli bir konuda araştırma yapmak ve sunmak için bir araya gelirler. Bir konu seçildikten sonra, öğrenciler konuyu araştırarak sorumlu öğretmenlerin rehberliği ve desteği ile daha fazla araştırma yapabilecekleri bir alt konu seçerler. Daha sonra öğrenciler, diğer öğrencilerden, öğretmenlerinden ve velilerinden oluşan geniş bir izleyici kitlesi ile fikirlerini paylaşırlar. Bu çalışmalar öğrencilerin eleştirel düşünme becerilerini ve konuşmalarındaki akıcılıklarını geliştirmelerine yardımcı olmaktadır.

Bugüne kadarki forumlarımızda; çocuk hakları, sağlıklı ve mutlu bir yaşam tarzı, teknolojinin öyküsü, dünyanın her yerinde görgü, saygı, video oyunlarında şiddet, zorbalık vb. konular işlendi.

English Fun Club:  English Fun Club'ın amacı, öğrencilere küresel konu ve sorunlar hakkında farkındalık kazandırmak ve öğrencilerin İngilizce bilgilerini geliştirmektir. English Fun club iletişime dayalı ve proje tabanlı etkinlikler aracılığı ile bu süreci öğrenciler için keyifli ve verimli hale getirmektedir. 

Newsletter : 1-4.sınıflarda  2 ayda bir olmak üzere İngilizce çalışmalarımızı anlatan veli bültenleri hazırlanmakta ve Okul Bilgi Portalı’nda yayınlanmaktadır.

Değerlendirme
1 ve 2. sınıflarda öğrencilere yazılı ya da sözlü değerlendirme yapılmaz. Öğrencilere, sınıf başarılarının pekiştirilmesi amacı ile ödül olarak yıldız, rozet ya da başarı sertifikaları verilir. Öğrenci gelişimi sürekli izlenir ve veliler bilgilendirilir.
3.sınıflarda her dönemde, sınıf içerisindeki hedef kelimeler ve konu ile ilgili küçük değerlendirmeler uygulanır.
4. sınıflarda, öğrencilere her dönemde 2 yazılı değerlendirme uygulanır. Öğrencilerin genel durumu, gelişim raporları ve ara karnelerle veliler sürekli bilgilendirilirler.
CEF Avrupa Birliği Standartları çerçevesinde öğrencilerimiz 4.sınıfın sonunda A1+ düzeyine ulaşarak ortaokula hazırlanmış olurlar.

General Aims for Lower Primary School (1-4)

The general aims for TED Ankara College Lower Primary School are to enable the students to:

• be happy life-long learners with a love of English,
• learn to take responsibility for their learning,
• gain self-confidence and critical thinking skills,
• achieve an A1/A1+ level within the framework of European Standards in regards to speaking, reading comprehension, listening comprehension and writing skills,
• communicate effectively at an elementary level both orally and in writing,
• recognize and understand other cultures and lifestyles,
• maintain what they learn and build on it in the following years,
• learn English according to international standards and aim to be successful in international exams,
• take pleasure in learning a foreign language while learning to appreciate other cultures.

At our school our students learn English through methods and techniques which support interest and motivation.  In accordance with the multiple intelligence theory, we make every effort to respect the fact that each student has a different learning style and we ensure that the classroom activities and applied techniques are both visual and auditory and that they help the students to maintain what they learn. Throughout all levels, the English lessons are divided between main course/grammar lessons and skills-based lessons, and they are conducted by both Turkish and foreign English teachers.

Grade 1: Programme and Aims

In the first year, English classes are comprised of 10 hours of English per week. In the first semester, the lessons are based mainly on listening and speaking activities since the students are still learning to read  and write in Turkish.  Also, in the first semester, much of the focus is placed on phonics.  By learning the phonetic sounds, the students are better prepared for reading and writing.  In the second  semester,  along with  listening  and  speaking,  importance  is  also given  to  writing  and reading.  

Our students learn to use English in parallel with the textbooks through student-oriented activities; they learn through stories, rhymes, listening activities, repetition, illustrations, animations, painting and pasting. In this way, all 4 skills are implemented into the lessons. Our goal is to train a generation of critical thinkers. The technical equipment and multimedia support in our classrooms help to make the lessons more interesting.

By the end of Grade 1, the students are able to:

• Listen and understand instructions and very short, simple texts,
• Ask and answer very simple questions,
• Use simple  phrases  and  sentences when communicating, 
• Read and  understand  phrases, short sentences and very short, simple reading texts,
• Write simple  topic-based  words and short sentences,
• Comprehend certain grammatical structures.
• Have a real feeling for English and its sounds (phonics) with emphasis on listening and speaking.
• Develop a positive attitude towards language learning both in terms of how they view the language, as well as their ability to use it with more confidence.
• Identify target vocabulary and use it in their daily lives.
• Use correct pronunciation and internalize the vocabulary and everyday expressions.
• Respond to simple commands.
• Recognise the letters of the English alphabet.

Grade 2: Programme and Aims

Our English program continues in the second year with 10 hours of English a week.  With the support of our course materials and textbooks, we try to broaden our students’  imagination and creativity. Our aim is to educate students who are confident, can think critically, can communicate effectively in written and verbal forms at their own level and can transfer what they have learned to the following year. We continue to use multimedia support in our technically equipped classrooms.

By the end of Grade 2, the students are able to:

• Recognize word order.
• Distinguish between statements, questions, commands and exclamations.
• Use descriptive words in their writing.
• Discover the meaning of unfamiliar words using context clues.
• Learn a variety of comprehension strategies.
• Listen and understand classroom language and instructions,
• Obtain specific information by asking questions,
• Distinguish between right or wrong information
• Establish basic social contact by making short and meaningful sentences,
• Read and understand short simple texts,
• Write simple phrases, sentences and very short paragraphs.

Grade 3: Programme and Aims

In the 3rd year, our English program consists of 12 English lessons per week. The level and content of the program is planned to ensure that the students who have already started our school and those who have recently joined our school, reach the same level at the end of the year. The aim of the program is to guide children in a delightful and imaginative learning environment.  The course focuses on a variety of high interest topics which expand the vocabulary necessary for varied and more independent communication in English.  The approach is communicative and topic-based.  We reinforce what is taught through activities where our students can develop their skills with pleasure. In the lessons, activities are used to enhance thinking skills and improve memory, to develop language creatively and to encourage critical thinking and cross-curriculum thinking while teaching good social values. These activities include songs, chants, karaoke activities, animations, games, stories, pair and group work, and self-evaluation. We continue to use multimedia support in our technically equipped classrooms.

By the end of 3rd grade, the students are able to:

• Listen, understand, speak, read and write basic language structures, simple language patterns and words,
• Distinguish between right or wrong information,
• Listen and understand classroom language and follow specific instructions,
• Establish basic social contact by making short and meaningful sentences,
• Read and understand short simple texts,
• Write simple phrases, sentences and short paragraphs,
• Present or communicate what he/she has learnt,
• Read and arrange pictures and sentences in sequence,
• Express needs, give basic information and use classroom language appropriately,
• Read and understand phrases and texts and discover the meaning of unfamiliar words,
• Use simple descriptive details,
• Write from pictures, story sequences and captions,
• Listen for both general understanding and specific information.

Grade 4: Programme and Aims

In the 4th year, our students again receive 12 hours of English per week. We aim to help students in this age group to learn English passionately and to improve their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. While our students are reminded what they have learned up to this level through repetition, new language structures and words are taught using a variety of stimulating activities. We also conduct language reinforcement activities through research, presentations and songs. At the end of fourth grade, we aim for our students to reach CEF A1 + level in accordance with European Union standards.

By the end of grade 4, the students will:

• learn basic rules of English Grammar and practise the use of structures in life-like contexts,
• understand and use familiar everyday expressions regarding personal details and needs,
• share their ideas, thoughts and information clearly and appropriately with others while others partaking in a variety of speaking opportunities such as group discussions, story-telling and drama activities,
• develop their creative writing skills
• develop age-appropriate critical thinking / reading skills,
• learn that a good learner needs to "question" everything,

English Activities

Outside of the classroom, the students have ample opportunity to partake in various English activities such as:

• English Radio Program: English radio presentations are made by the students on Tuesday mornings. Students give information about the weather, the lunch menu, important days and events, and the activity that is planned for English Day.
• English Presentations: In the 2nd semester, all students participate in an English show. Students present what they have learned during the year in a theatrical production while focusing on good social values. The students always find this to be quite entertaining and motivating.
• “English Day”:  Within the framework of “Let’s Speak English Together”, different activities are exhibited every week. The students have the opportunity to take part in games, work together with other students and practice their speaking skills! 
• English Fun Club: The aim of the English Fun Club is to give students the chance to use English in more comfortable environment. Different topics are introduced through fun projects and games.. The English Fun club makes this process enjoyable and productive for students through communication and project-based activities. While improving our children’s critical thinking skills.
• 'The Young Voice of TED' Forum: Our 4th grade students have the opportunity to participate in a forum.   The students come together to find and present information on a specific topic.  Some of the topics presented thus far are children’s rights, a healthy and happy lifestyle, the story of technology, manners around the world, respect, violence in video games and bullying.   After a subject is chosen, the students explore the topic, and with the guidance and support of the responsible teachers, they choose a subtopic where they are able to investigate even further.  Afterwards the students share their ideas before a vast audience made up of their fellow students, their teachers and parents.  It helps to build their critical thinking skills, their confidence, and their fluency.
• English Competitions: English competitions between classes (i.e. 'Who Wants To Be The English Champ?’, “Spelling Bee”, etc.) are planned throughout the year.  These activities help to motivate the students as well as to teach the students the importance of teamwork. A selection of activities are also planned throughout the year and students complete projects relevant to their level. These activities are aimed at raising awareness about different global issues as well as to emphasize social values.
• LMS Programs: Online programs, which correspond with the main course book in each grade, are used to offer support at home. These programs feature additional exercises that focus on the target vocabulary and key language from each unit as well as animated stories, interactive songs and fun activities.  These programs help to reinforce the language that was taught in the classroom.
• On-line Reading Programs: The RazPlus online reading platform is currently being used in grades 1-4. Books are selected from the library of the program in accordance with the level of the students. Students can enter the program with the passwords given to them, read these books, make voice recordings and listen to audio tracks of the books. The activities related to the books help to improve the students' critical thinking skills.
• International Examinations: Our 4th grade students have the opportunity to enter the TOEFL Primary Step 1 exam which has been administered in our school since the 2018-2019 academic year. The students prepare for these exams throughout the course of the year.
• Newsletter: Parents have the chance to read our English bulletins at the end of each semester which explain what the students accomplished thus far as well as upcoming activities.  The newsletters are colourfully presented and include photos of the students' work as well as some of the activities that take place in the classroom.  The parents are also offered some advice and ideas on how they can help their child at home.  The newsletters are published on the School Information Portal.

Evaluations

Grades 1 and 2 are not subject to written or oral assessments. Students are given stars, badges, or certificates of achievement as a reward in order to positively reinforce their class participation and achievements. Student development is constantly monitored and parents are informed accordingly.

In the third year, informal written evaluations and small evaluations related to the subject are administered periodically

Grade 4 students are given 2 formal written assessments per semester. Parents are kept up-to-date with the general status of the students through progress reports and end of semester carnets.  Within the framework of CEF (European Union Standards), our students reach an A1 + level at the end of the 4th grade and are prepared for secondary school.
